Year Ahead Spreads

why bother?

The year ahead tarot spread is a way to both set intentions and let the universe work the way it is going to whether you like it or not. When you choose your card for the year, which is going to be your north star, the months around it act as constellations all relating back in some way to your card.

I wrote last week about Death and how I think that may be my card for the year. But that strikes me now as too easy and also perhaps not very helpful for me. 2025 has been a Death year, a Tower year, a Devil year, the three cards we most fear. The card I chose last year was The Wheel of Fortune. Below are the notes I took from my own spread.

I realize I started my year with the Death card and in relation to my card of the year it makes so much sense—change was inevitable and so much of it was out of my control. It helps me to reflect back on where I was and how each card for the month allows me a meaning making experience, as I look back. For December 2025 I have the Ace of Wands which is a reason to put Death to the side and focus on the power of the future.

The Ace of Wands is a beautiful card for end the year because it is all about beginnings. It is the spark and inspiration of new projects and ideas. Wands are fire cards, and spirit cards, and power cards. Aces get us started on our paths. So having the Ace of Wands as my final card of the year reminds me of my inherent optimism in the future, my belief in creation, in creativity as a way out of pain.

I’m not completely committing right now, but the Ace of Wands may be my card for 2026.
