Decisions, decisions
This card has come up too many times in readings during the past month or so for me not to dig in to figure out why. In Kim Krans’ depiction above, the Pentacles live inside a rainbow ouroboros which is inside a butterfly. It is a pretty image reminding us that our choices move us forward as the butterfly emerges from its cocoon, that change is inevitable and we can embrace it with balance and excitement.
When this card appears during a reading I usually talk about Pentacles representing real world problems, resources, opportunities, money, jobs. I often question whether the querent is holding off on making a decision, and is perhaps in limbo because of it. Two gives us both the idea of choice but also of dualism, especially in this case where the pentacles live within the ouroboros or infinity sign.
The Power in Choice
The Two of Pentacles can be either/or and both at once. Think of holding two opposing views as true. It’s harder in some ways than just landing on a choice and moving on.
So what on earth is the Greek god Aeolus doing on Dali’s Two of Pentacles, creating wind with his breath, the wind that can move us forward safely or wreck our surroundings? I think Dali’s depiction of the card reminds us of the possibility of danger in change, but also its necessity. We ourselves have the capacity to change in a measured and calm way, or indeed we can use our breath and wind in change in a haphazard and potentially lethal way. There is also a deep recognition here though, that some circumstances are out of our control—the wind is going to blow and we can’t stop it. We can only control our reactions to it. Dali’s cards always land on the edges of interpretation—probably why I love his weird and wild deck so much.

Year Ahead Spread readings are starting to book up. We take your card for the year (or help choose one if you haven’t already), and build your year by month around it. It provides a great structure and reference point as you move through 2024. You can go really deep with it, creating monthly art or writing with it, or just keep your card for the month handy on your altar or bedside table. I’m a planner by nature, so these readings are my favorite.
I really appreciate you showing up to read my musings.
